Why Subscribe?

Bartleby is a free, weekly newsletter that strives to be humorous or interesting. Sometimes both. I have always loved authors like Raymond Carver who can make a meal out of the ordinary and Dave Sedaris who can make the ordinary hilarious. I don’t ever expect to be as brilliant as either of those, but it’s good to have goals!

I’m Rebecca Donohue, a writer, producer, director with deep comedy roots who now lives in LA. However, I’m originally from New York. I only mention the New York origins because a New Yawkiness is a difficult thing to shake, so I’ve come to accept it or more accurately, revel in it. 😂

My goal with Bartleby is to create the type of newsletter that I’d want to read. Here’s what it is:

  • a weekly email with my thoughtful writing, which is always free

So, why pay for it, if it’s free?

Very good question. You don’t have to. You’ll get the same thing either way. What payments do is they allow me to focus more on this particular project. The more payments I receive, the more focus I give it. You have to think of it like you’re paying for one of those Zoom comedy shows everyone attended during the pandemic or maybe just think of it as becoming a patron of the arts. It’s a donation, plain and simple. And, of course, there’s always the free option, which is the default way this newsletter lands in your inbox.

Here are the subscription options:

$0 = Free, the default way everyone receives this newsletter

$5 / mo = You believe in these works and want to see more. (Why, thank you!)

$55+ / year = You want to donate once and forget it. You’re having a beautifully high moment and you want to fill the world with more love, but then you want to forget about what you’ve done tomorrow. (A great option and one I’d undoubtedly choose, btw.)

Note: I’m pretty consistent about this email, but there will be times where it goes on a brief hiatus due to other work that I have. When that happens, I’ll be sure to let you know. It’s rare, but never say never.

Thank you for taking the time to read, enjoy and engage with this newsletter. I have always appreciated every person who has ever come to a show, read a thing, pressed a like button or said “hello” afterwards. After all, the goal has always been to connect. It’s what humans do.
